[It's a struggle for Quark to even give Frisk a gentle response. His tone may be a bit clipped as a result, but of course it isn't their fault. He knows they're worried about their mom, and they deserve to hear something nice. He wants to try. He really, really does. It's just so hard. He thinks about House screaming as Beckett breaks his bones and he can't stop feeling so cheated somehow. That was supposed to be the end.]
I'm nowhere close to downtown. If--If I was--
[Maybe he could have done something to stop it? No. There's nothing he would've be able to do. But maybe, just maybe...he could do something else to make himself feel better. Something stupid. He doesn't care about logic right now.]
[They can't say the rage is entirely unfamiliar. They remember how they felt when Flowey had killed Asgore. They remember-
They remember a lot of things. Including a lot of things they don't want to. Things they shove aside to focus on the now, because they can't get caught up in memories. Not at this moment.]
Please... you gotta stay safe okay. Sans is- [They swallow hard. He had to come back. Don't say dead he's coming back.] Mom's downtown. I can't... I can't lose everybody.
[He stops, counts to five. And then to ten, closing his eyes. Frisk is upset, really upset. They can't both be upset, it won't do them any good. But god, he wants to be upset--he wants to be so upset. But even without Frisk saying it, he remembers seeing Sans' name on the Obituary.]
There's something you gotta know about monsters. And... you can't tell others, please.
[For Toriel's sake, and Sans', and any other monster that might come to Norfinbury. But they trust him, so they don't wait for him to agree. Instead Frisk shivers very slightly. And when they speak... they sound a lot older. Someone who's seen a lot more.]
Monsters aren't like humans. Humans are made of water and lots of different things. Monsters are made of magic. I don't really get all of it but Magic depends on souls, and souls depend on feelings. How monsters feel and how humans or those around them feel.
It means if somebody tries to hurt Mom, they'll hurt her a lot more if they want to hurt her, or even kill her. Especially if they have a lot of LOVE - Level Of ViolencE. [They don't wait to be asked to explain the acronym.]
That's why I gotta be there. That's why I have to make sure she's okay.
[For a long moment Quark doesn't say anything. He just listens, and processes Frisk's words. He believes them, of course he does. Even if it's all stuff he doesn't understand, he's not going to question it. It all is what it is.
How is he supposed to encourage his friend and tell them to be calm when he feels neither calm nor in a mood to encourage anyone? He doesn't want to tell Frisk Don't! or You can't! Saying those things just make him feel his own inadequacies. It would be hypocritical.]
[... it's one of those moments where Frisk thinks they may have said more than they meant to. Oh well, no taking it back now. Nor did they really want to.]
[Quark is silent. He knows what Frisk is saying. He knows. It makes his heart feel like it's swelling with how much it hurts to think about.]
Don't die.
[His voice comes out quiet--more quiet than it should considering the almost accusing way in which it comes out. He doesn't mean it to sound that way. It...it's just so hard to do this.]
[Frisk does hear that accusatory tone though, and even flinches a little bit.]
'm sorry. I'm not used to-
[They cut themselves off quickly with a swallow. 'I'm not used to people remembering when I die' is what they meant to say. But they don't want Quark to know about that. Least of all right now. It wouldn't help anything at the best of times. It really won't help now.
The worst part is they know they can't promise him that. They can't promise him they won't die. Because if it comes down to Toriel or themselves... it's better if it's them.]
I'm not gonna go looking for him. I don't want to find him. Just Mom.
Morning 101, shortly after that thing that happened
[By this point their facade of calm is cracking badly. They stop, trying to take slower breaths so they don't panic.]
What about you? Where are you?
[Please don't say downtown.]
